Q: How do I set up an account?

If you are with the College, you may set up an account to download images for use in Oxy projects.

Here's how:

1. Submit a request for access via email to
2. Create an account on Photoshelter (our photo management platform)
3. You will be notified you when your download privileges are activated.
4. Please plan ahead, privileges are not immediate. Once you have permission, you may download as often as you like. users
The general public may not download photos.
News media may download photos here using the password "oxyphotos".

Q: What if I can't find the photo I'm looking for?
A: If you would like a custom search for photos not in this collection, fill out a request here or by email at

Please provide as much detail as you can:

  • Are you looking for photos from a specific event? If so, when and where was the event?
  • Are you looking or photos of a specific person? Please provide the full name.
  • Will the photos you are requesting be used in web/email or print? Are there other technical specifications?
  • When did you need the photos?
  • How many photos are needed?
Please provide enough time for your project. Requests are handled in the order received.

Q: Will the Oxy watermark appear on downloaded photos?
A: No, the Oxy watermark will not appear on photos as long as you are logged in.
It will appear on low-res comp downloads.

Q: What sizes are available?
A: After you sign up for a Photoshelter account and receive permission to download, this window will appear when you download a photo:

Q: What are Lightboxes?
A: Lightboxes are a way to keep photos you are interested in downloading organized.
They are optional.
You can use Lightboxes to collect images and compare them before downloading.
You can also share your Lightboxes with others to collaborate on projects.

Q: What photography services are available on campus?
A: An Oxy photographer is available for photo sessions on and off campus.
There is no charge for services, but Communications reserves the ability to decline photo requests.

Q: How do I schedule a photography session?
A: You can use this form. Requests should be made with plenty of advance notice.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: There is no fee, photo services are part of the 
Office of Marketing & Communications.

All work will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis due to the limited staff.

We reserve the right to reject photo sessions.
Requests are evaluated and approved based on how they can serve the College.

If our Oxy photographer is already booked, we can recommend a freelance photographer. Their rates may apply.

Q: How can I use the photos from my photography session?
A: You may use any photos created from a session with the Oxy photographer as needed for print or web publications.
You may also use them for other publicity purposes for the College.

Q: Will anyone else have access to photos from my photography session?
A: The primary role of the Oxy photographer is to capture the life and history of the College. All photos are the property of Occidental College.

Other departments may request to use photos from if appropriate for their needs.

Those who have booked the Oxy photographer may have first-use rights to their photos. Images become part of the College collection after that.
