The 2019 Occidental College Phi Beta Kappa speaker Kimberlé Crenshaw, a law professor, civil rights advocate and intersectional theorist, gave her lecture, "Thirty Years of Theorizing Justice: Intersectionality, Critical Race Theory and Contemporary Issues" on April 5, 2019 in Thorne Hall.

Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw is an American civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory. She is a fulltime professor at the UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law School, where she specializes in race and gender issues. Her work on race and gender was influential in the drafting of the equality clause in the South African Constitution. In 2001, she was instrumental in facilitating the inclusion of gender in the declaration of the United Nations’ World Conference on Racism. In the domestic arena, she has served as a member of the National Science Foundation’s committee to research violence against women, and has assisted the legal team representing Anita Hill.
