Occidental College physics students Nicole Chen '14, left, and Jack Nelson '17 (second from right) build and launch a high-altitude helium balloon carrying a payload of sensors, a video camera and a modified stills camera that will fly to near space. The project was organized by Physics lab supervisor Chuck Oravec, center. Adjunct assistant professor Rafael Araya-Gochez of the Physics Department also helped. The balloon was launched from Acton, Calif. on May 4, 2014. The balloon, at first thought to be lost, was eventually recovered using the GPS transponder. It was way off course, ending up at Fort Irwin in the Mojave Desert. Due to finals, Nicole and Jack could not be there for the recovery.
